Message: Hi, I volunteered at Tupendane Center in Arusha this past year, and I now have some individuals who are interested in sponsoring some of our students and sending them as day schoolers to Cherith Junior School. I wanted to find out some more information about your school, including prices and more about the curriculum. Thank you!

Oloirien Valley School Founded by a former government school teacher, this private school has grown from 12 pupils to 142. It started as a nursery school in 1996 and primary classes were added in 2000. The school provides classes from Nursery to Primary 7 and has 12 teachers and eight classrooms. “Oloirien” means teak in Maasai.

“Oloirien” means teak in Maasai. Academic performance has always been good and the school has been awarded certificates of merit for being in the top ten schools in the region in the national exams. The school would like to expand and has plans to build a second storey on an existing building which will house classrooms, staff rooms, computer room, and a library. Most of the children come from low-income families which cannot provide much additional support to the school. Any Help in providing modern desks, a library, a staffroom etc is welcome , see our “Support Us” Page.

The School is situated in Oloirien Village, Enaboishu Division, Kiranyi Ward (W) District in Arusha Region.

It is near Ngaramtoni settlement which is about ten Kilometres away from Arusha Town

There is a big sign post on the left side of the road, as you travel up from Arusha town, bearing the name of it school and its address. Before you reach the small road along which the school is situated 400m from the main road, you will find a small hotel, Texas Inn, also on the left side of the road.

And before Texas Inn, a few metres away as you come from Arusha town, there is a road leading to TPRI (Tropical Pesticides Research Institute).

A Short History of the School:

It was started as a small Nursery class of twelve pupils by Mrs. Ester Frederick Kinabo, a Secondary School teacher in 1996.

Slowly and gradually it expanded and grew into a Primary school. On 19/04/2000 it was registered as a pre and primary school under article 26 of the education Act. No. 25 of 1978.

Since then the school has produced five batches of class seven graduates, who have all managed to join different private and government schools in the country.

Edmund Rice Sinon Secondary School is a private Catholic school for young men and women in the Catholic Archdiocese of Arusha and is managed by the Congregation of Christian Brothers East Africa District for the Archdiocese. It was founded in 1988 in two classrooms in the neighbouring Engosengiu Primary school.

Edmund Rice Sinon Secondary School is more than a school. It is a concept that is grounded in universal values and human aspirations such as:

  • The human person is made in the image of God.
  • Perfection of the human person is successful only in a community context where harmony and respect abound.
  • All life is sacred and the dignity of the human person is part of this principle. He/she needs education in the spiritual, physical, intellectual, social and psychological areas of life to mature fully.
  • Human beings are caretakers of all natural resources for all generations. Consequently the school is committed to creating programs and practices that are grounded in the above values and aspirations.

A wide range of extra-curricular activities is available to students:

Sports including Football, Netball, Basketball, Volleyball and Table Tennis are most popular sports with Athletics having been introduced recently.

At 22 years old Gemma Sisia travelled to Uganda to volunteer as a teacher, where she taught girls maths and sewing. This experience led to a fervent belief that a free, high-quality education should be the right of all children in the world and that education is the strongest weapon in the fight against poverty, corruption and political instability.

Upon returning to her native Australia, Gemma fundraised to help underprivileged children in East Africa complete their schooling. She would raise enough money to start an official fund to invest in the education of East Africa’s poorest children. Along with the gift of a small plot of land in Arusha, Tanzania, Gemma began to build The School of St Jude with the help of friends, family and Rotary groups

THE PLANNING OF ST JUDY SCHOOL FOR FUTURE

It will be educating up to 2000 students each year, from Grade 1 to Form VI, across three campuses. It will employ over 500 local staff, will be predominantly run by East Africans, and will provide boarding for up to 1500 students.

We are working towards becoming a Centre of Excellence for teaching and learning at primary and secondary levels, and will be helping its graduates to realise their aspirations. Graduates from St Jude’s will be respectful, responsible, honest and kind citizens, gainfully employed, capable of trustworthy leadership in their communities and at the national level, and will be giving back to the school and their communities.

St Jude’s will be seen as a model for fighting poverty through education, and will be contributing to the improvement of teaching and learning across Tanzania.
